Utah Cup Rules:
1.) The UTAH CUP is a year-long cross-country (XC) soaring competition sponsored by the UTAH HANG GLIDING AND PARAGLIDING ASSOCIATION (UHGPGA). All current full-time members of the UHGPGA are entered in the CUP. Pilots must be current full-time members of the UHGPGA at the time of the flight to be eligible.
2.) The purpose of the CUP is to encourage UHGPGA pilots to fly cross-country, recognize pilots for their efforts, and share the experience and hopefully the knowledge gained. In the interest of safety, the format is specifically designed to be unpressured and low-key. Winners receive no money or prizes, only a plaque and the respect of their peers. Actually, the real prize is the flying.
3.) There are three classes with 3 places in each class.
RW (RIGID WING HANG GLIDER)
1ST, 2ND, 1ST SPORT
HG (FLEX WING HANG GLIDER)
1ST, 2ND, 1ST SPORT
PG (PARAGLIDER)
1ST, 2ND, 1ST SPORT
All pilots entered are eligible for 1st or 2nd place.
Pilots who have never flown more than 100 miles in RW or HG classes, or 50 miles in PG class (prior to the beginning of the year) are also eligible for 1st Sport.
4.) The Utah Cup Trophy will be awarded at a club meeting early next year to the Cup pilot who has had the longest flight this year. It will remain in his or her possession for one year and then passed on to the next winner, and so on… The winning pilots’ names with the year and mileage are engraved onto the trophy.
5.) All flights must originate in Utah but may end anywhere.
6.) To register a flight, fill out a 2001 Utah Cup Flight Registration Form and mail it to the address on the form. Only registered flights will be accepted. Provisions are being made for pilots to register their flights electronically. Details will be published on the UHGPGA web site. www.uhgpga.org
7.) Feel free to register as many flights as you care to. To be valid, flights must be registered before the end of the year.
8.) Winning flight distances are measured using the F.A.I great circle distance formula. The latitude and longitude of the LZ are obtained either from a GPS or from appropriate maps (1:100000 scale or better). Official flight distances are truncated to whole miles. (i.e. 38.8 miles -> 38 miles)
9.) The Utah Cup is informal and run on the honor system. Flight verification is not required but if you have it, it will help dispel any doubt cast upon your claim.
10.) For each class, if participation is minimal (registered flights), the number of plaques awarded will be reduced according to the number of pilots entered as follows: No pilots entered -> 0 plaques; 1-5 pilots -> 1 plaque; 6-10 pilots -> 2 plaques;
11.) In the case of an exact (or multiple) tie(s), both (all) pilots win!
12.) In the case where an eligible pilot wins 1st Sport and either 1st or 2nd also in the same class, only one plaque will be awarded with both categories engraved on it.
13.) Tow flights will be accepted but the declared start point must be an easily identified map landmark such as a road intersection, and you must fly directly over the start point after release.
14.) Flights violating the Salt Lake Terminal Class B airspace will not be accepted.
15.) Take care and remember the #1 rule: ALWAYS FLY SAFELY.
